Must See Places in San Antonio
You might be wondering what there is in San Antonio, Texas that would make other people want to visit the city. Actually, the city of San Antonio is very full of history and is a thriving city – so there is much to learn about San Antonio, Texas that will stay in your memory for a long time.
When in the city of San Antonio, you definitely do not want to miss visiting the Alamo museum within #300 Alamo Plaza. This is the compound formerly known as San Antonio de Valero Mission which was constructed by the Spanish Empire back in the 18th century originally to be the place to educate the area Native Americans who had become Catholics. Though the mission was later abandoned, the compound became a fortress where the famous Battle of the Alamo of 1836 occurred.
If you have little time to go around visiting places, then at least visit the Alamo museum and try to learn about that major battle that showed how brave men face death even in the face of superior enemy forces.
Lieutenant Colonel William B. Travis was the leader of the estimated 187 soldiers who were standing guard over the Alamo in February 1836. The Alamo was then attacked by around 6,000 troops of the Mexican government who were led by General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna for 13 days which ended on March 6 when all the troops under Lt. Colonel Travis (and Travis himself) were killed by the Mexicans. Even the Alamo troops who peacefully surrendered were shot dead.
This is why you hear Americans spout the battle cry “Remember the Alamo” to honor the memory of the doomed Texans trapped within the walls of the Alamo defending it.
At present, the Alamo is officially classified as a National Historical Landmark.
If you have more time on your hands, you could also go around and visit the tourist spots throughout the city such as the River Walk. The River Walk is located within the downtown area and has various restaurants, bars, and retailers that line the area. The Ameson River Theater is particularly attractive when Christmas and New Year come around because the area is ablaze with lights, music such as flamenco and folklorico, and very popular during the Fiesta Noche del Rio and other holidays.
If you like movies, then you might want to try out the exotic themed movie theater Aztec On The River which is also located along the River Walk.
Between the Alamo and the River Walk, the Alamo is definitely the prized historical landmark of San Antonio. But the River Walk is popular for commercial reasons and offers great entertainment.
You might also want to examine the San Antonio Cavalry Museum which is right beside the Alamo, where you can actually catch a re-enactment of historical events. There you will also find exhibits and artifacts related to the cavalry tradition of San Antonio, Texas.
More modern places of interest do exist so do take the time to walk around and inspect the city.
